I started working at CNN/SI Television just as the staff was being assembled for the launch, in November of 1996. The actual channel went on the air on December 12, 1996. As the picture editor, my job is to research, scan and transmit Sports Illustrated photography for editorial usage on the station. Most of what I contribute is for the feature stories produced for air -- video restrictions on many professional sports leagues prevent us from using more than a pre-determined number of minutes per hour. I also have the opportunity to produce the occasional photo essay, in a segment called "SI Images."
CNN/SI's companion website was launched in the summer of 1997. While I was involved from the beginning, it was not until early 1999 that I was given responsibility as Picture Editor of the website as well. Since the online medium depends more heavily on still photography than television, working with the website has taken on a large part of my workday.
